50 years of North Sea achievement celebrated in new book

Wednesday, 09 September 2015 12:23

Balmoral Group, the Aberdeen-based subsea equipment manufacturer, has published a limited edition case-bound book entitled ABZ and Big Oil to celebrate 50 years of North Sea oil and gas activity.

Released at the Offshore Europe exhibition in Aberdeen the 280-page book was written by prominent energy reporter Jeremy Cresswell with Trevor Garlick, BP’s regional president North Sea, providing the foreword. The publication was edited and produced by Balmoral’s in-house PR team, Steve Gibb and Ewen Milne.

This is the third book in the Balmoral series and was published to highlight the outstanding success of the North Sea since activity began in 1965. All the key discoveries, events, political machinations and achievements are recorded as are the stories of many local organisations that had their origins in the North Sea and went on to become global successes.

The North Sea also turned out to be the starting point for many individuals that are now feted for their ingenuity and innovation worldwide. 10 such personalities including Douglas Craig, Tommy Dreelan, Bob Keiller and Colin Welsh offer their personal takes on the industry in frank and revealing interviews.

Jim Milne, chairman and managing director of Balmoral, said: “2015 sees us 50 years into the North Sea story – and, coincidentally, Balmoral’s 35th anniversary - and we are proud to have played a part in this breath-taking industry.

“The book’s sub-title 50 Years of Black Gold in the Silver City is a reference to our first book, published in 2000. That was a reflection on the oil and gas industry and its impact on the north of Scotland at the time, while Black and Green Gold, produced in 2010, focused on the future and the role that Aberdeen and northern Scotland was to play in the years ahead.

“Undoubtedly times are tough in the industry at the moment but I felt it was important to recognise 50 years of incredible achievement in the North Sea whilst simultaneously marking our 35th anniversary and, coincidentally, my 50th year in business.

“The North Sea Conversations section is a fantastic read and you could not get 10 more experienced and enthusiastic people than those featured. I’m quite sure nothing like this has been published before.”

As well as the personalities mentioned above, other interviewees contributing to the book include Alfie Cheyne, Professor Alex Kemp, Larry Kinch, Gordon McIntosh and Graeme Sword.

A limited edition of 2000 copies has been produced and, for the first time, a cover price has been placed on the book. All monies received from sales, or donations received, will go directly to Friends of ANCHOR, Balmoral’s in-house charity which supports the cancer and haematology unit at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary.
